Title: Through the Trees
Artist: Lefteris Tapas

The facade of a building becomes an “exhibition space” where a work of art is displayed. Private space is temporarily transformed into public space and Art is made available for free and effortlessly, emphasizing the importance of the public in an era of increasing privatization, and the importance of protecting the aesthetics and identity of the city in times of rapid development. It asserts our right to the presence of art in our daily lives, and to care for the cities where we live.

Lefteris Tapa’s work is based on the association of plants with the concept of renewal, vegetation and the continuity of life. Plants serve as central elements in both motifs and symbolize hope and the promise of a better future. They suggest transformation as they grow and “embrace” the building, giving a sense of rebirth. The sense of wind and the movement of the scattered plants and seeds symbolizes evolution and creative energy.

Title : DARK BLUE
Artist : Alexis Vayianos

Dark blue is a mixed-media installation of oil colour and acrylic, wood, and cutouts by hand. In his large-scale work, Vayianos treats patterns with great detail and dedication, repeating select traits or themes, like leitmotifs, to finally construct a unique composition. The chair as subject and object is a firm recurrence but also a polymorphous one, something that has the potential to morph into myriad positions and capacities, fragments and adjoined parts. It is also a feature of focus in Vayianos’ work over the last few years. For Dark blue, he worked with kids between the ages of 3 and 6, who made drawings of chairs as they pictured them in their individual minds.

Title: Τhe Excluded Form
ΤheExcludedForm involves an intervention on the façade of a building under-construction, and wishes to foster mutual influence between the public space and the general public. By choosing to have their work printed on the scaffold netting around a building, Maria Lianou and Alexandros Christophinis’s (ANBAU) exterior of the building into an exhibition space. Thus, when in place, ΤheExcludedForm will transform the private space into a public one, and its very presence in the public sphere will be pointing to questions on the management of the urban landscape as a right and a responsibility.

Artists: Maria Lianou and Alexandros Christophinis.

Lilies of the field

Each person perceives the landscape and its constituent parts according to their personal experiences, their cultural and aesthetic background. The carry, therefore, their own subjective point of view. As a result, whether consciously or not, one’s personal perception influences the actual landscape, and accordingly the collective cultural experience. Τhis means that, whether consciously or not, one’s individual perception influences both the actual landscape and the collective cultural experience. ANBAU’s intervention, provides a visual interpretation of selected flowers, removed from the rural landscape of Cyprus. In doing so, ANBAU position the ordinary and “unimportant” into the spotlight, thus reminding us of how what is rendered “unimportant” may also be fundamental. The work poses questions on the interaction between people and landscape, while as a landscape on display suggests an alternative reality for the city centre – one with native trees planted on Anexartisias street.

With references to Lilies of the field, a book of Cyprus Wild Flowers, by Ann Matthews 1968.

Title : Digger
Artist : Vasmoulakis Alexandros

Art Association Cathrine is pleased to announce the project The Excluded Form. The project provides a venue within public space where the public can intersect through a visual intervention by artist, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, installed on the facade of a building, known since the 1980s as Hotel Aquamarina, and currently under renovation before opening as Hotel Nyx.

On the coastal front of “new” Lemesos, this construction site has been selected as the place and platform of an encounter between Vasmoulakis’ large-scale work, “Digger”, and passersby, the very participants of the surrounding space. The objective of the action, The Excluded Form, is to prompt conversation between the installation piece “Digger” and the general public.

*Cathrine is run by visual artists Elena Kotasvili and Alexis Vayianos. The creative team of the project includes: Eudes Ajot (Curator), Alexis Papadopoulos (Architect), Maria Petrides (Independent writer)

This 8-storey building is known since the 1980s as Hotel Aquamarina, and is currently under renovation before opening as Hotel Nyx.

The breakneck speed with which the coastal front has undergone construction under the so-called “Cyprus Investment Programme” has in part transformed Lemesos once again and overturned its aesthetic, contributing in effect, to impacting the lives of long-term inhabitants of the area with an increase of air pollution and environmental noise.

Expansion of privatization in cities, and gentrification processes entail a radical shrinking of public space and a generating of new forms of displacement and exclusion. The construction site, here, has been selected as a temporary place and platform of an encounter between Vasmoulakis’ large-scale work and passersby, the very participants of the surrounding space. The objective of the action, The Excluded Form, is to prompt conversation between the installation piece “Digger” and the general public.
